Become a CASA Volunteer

A CASA is a volunteer from the community who wants to help find a safe, permanent, nurturing home for a child who has been a victim of abuse or neglect. CASAs aren't required to have a legal background to become a volunteer, but before becoming a CASA, they must undergo 30 hours of comprehensive training and pass a rigorous screening process.

CASAs are not paid for the time they spend on behalf of the children they serve. They do not work for Human Services or for attorneys. They are appointed by judges and volunteer their time because they care about children and want to help.

What does a CASA do?

Judges appoint CASAs to an abuse and neglect case. The CASA's primary job is to investigate a child's circumstances and to provide the court with critical information that will help the judge made decisions that serve the child's best interest.

To achieve this goal, the CASA will get to know the child and the people in his or her life, including foster parents, teachers, health care providers, caseworkers, siblings and others involved with the child. In addition, CASAs often:

  • Review all the records from the child's school, doctor's office, etc.
  • Spend time talking to the child
  • Visit the child's home
  • Observe visits between the parents and the child
  • Help coordinate visits between the child and any sisters and brothers, if they aren't living together

Who is eligible to become a CASA?

If you are an adult age 21 and over, then all you need to become a CASA volunteer is the desire to help vulnerable children find a safe and permanent home. CASA volunteers:

  • Participate in an extensive 30-hour training program
  • Volunteer about ten hours a month for at least 18 months
  • Provide desperately needed support to children who need it most

Applicants to become CASA volunteers are interviewed by Advocates' staff and must pass a screening process that includes a criminal background check with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the Central Registry.
